From a humble gathering in 1951 to Singapore's foremost Tamil community organisation — the story of TRC is the story of our people.
The Tamils Representative Council (Tamilar Pirathinithithuva Sabai) was founded as a non-profit social organization on 1 Aug 1951. It was initiated by Mr. G Sarangapany, a renowned Indian Community leader, and a few well-known personalities who came together to unite the Tamils and Tamil organizations that functioned on a sectarian basis — Hindus, Muslims, Christians and Buddhists — in Singapore.
Over seven decades, TRC has grown from a unifying ideal into Singapore's apex Tamil organisation, championing education, culture, welfare and youth development for thousands of families.
Mr. G Sarangapany and fellow community leaders establish the Tamilar Pirathinithithuva Sabai — a non-profit organisation dedicated to uniting Tamil Singaporeans across religious lines.
The organisation is revamped under the late Mr. G. Kandasamy. The Tamil name is changed to Tamizhar Peravai while retaining the English name. He attracts professionals and English-speaking Tamils, refocusing TRC on uplifting educational, economic, and social status. Funds grew from just $29.50 to over $800,000.
With the help of the Ministry of Education, TRC launches an island-wide educational assistance scheme using schools as tuition centres every Sunday. Hundreds of volunteers sacrifice their weekends to coach children in English, Mathematics, Science, and Tamil — reaching thousands of students.
With the advent of SINDA, TRC scales down tuition activities and refocuses on motivating students, Tamil language advocacy, Excellence Awards for top Indian students at PSLE, O and A levels, and government dialogues on examination scheduling and Mother Tongue policy.
TRC forms the TRC Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society as an economic arm, offering low-interest loans to members. Mr. P Kesavan takes over as President, serving until 1999.
Dr. Theyvendran creates closer links with grassroots organisations. TRC continues awarding bursaries to about 200 needy students annually, raising ~$25,000 each year. To date, over $500,000 has been awarded to more than 2,000 needy students.
Dr. Theyvendran hands leadership to Mr. V. Pandiyan, inviting a younger generation of professionals to lead TRC into the future. Mr. Pandiyan's deep community roots and experience — serving under three presidents — ensure continuity and fresh momentum.
